We are confident that our website will provide clear and concise help and give our patients the information they require in an easy and convenient format. It has been designed with the patient’s needs at the forefront of everything, from checking surgery times to letting us know what you think of us.
We would like to share with you all as valued patients of Fitzalan Medical Group the very disappointing news that today the Care Quality Commission has placed our surgery into special measures.
Following the visit which took place the week before Christmas we have worked very hard and already made a number of improvements on what is published in this report – and we want to work with you and the local community to make the practice the best it possibly can be.
As you may be aware GP practices are regularly reviewed by the Care Quality Commission. This is to make sure that health services, including GP practices, are providing well led, safe, and effective care.

It highlights key areas where we can improve as a GP practice including:
- How we manage repeat prescriptions;
- How we monitor and review patients with repeat prescriptions;
- The number of patients with long term conditions who have had an annual review;
- How we share and learn across the practice team;
- There was not a comprehensive audit plan for the practice.
It is important to say that the report did not find any cases where patients were being mistreated or directly given the wrong medication as part of their care.
We are understandably really disappointed as a practice by this report as we are committed to the care we provide for our patients and our part in the local community.
However, we have welcomed the areas the Care Quality Commission has highlighted and have already improved many of these, whilst working closely with the CQC team.
For example, all 7,500 patients who have repeat prescriptions have had a medication review, we have a new system in place to alert the team to anyone who is due their regular review, and we continue to work with all our patients with long term conditions to carry out their annual reviews.
Some of the changes we have had to make have been to how we work as a business, rather than to the care we provide directly to you as our patients. This means changes to our systems and processes behind the scenes. We recognise how important this is, but it is fair to say that sometimes last year this did come second to patient care, and we are now making sure we are meeting all of the standards and requirements we need to achieve.
We know there have been challenges last year, not least the significant increase in the number of patients at the practice, but it is our responsibility to provide high quality care, and we are committed to doing that.
We want Fitzalan Medical Group to be the best it possibly can be – for you, as our patients, and for the staff that work here. We are making improvements, and we will continue to make things better but we also want to hear from you.
